Industry-specific challenges

Energy costs are the second-largest cost block in paper production.

High energy costs

Paper production is among the most energy-intensive industries. Power and steam account for up to 30% of production costs.

Volatile markets

Fluctuating power and gas prices make long-term planning harder and put competitiveness at risk.

CO₂ reporting obligations

CSRD, EU ETS and national rules require complete, audit-proof emissions reporting.

Complex load profiles

Paper machines have specific load curves – making them flexible offers enormous savings potential on the spot market.

Energy flexibility

Monetize flexibility. Without capex.

Paper and pulp producers have substantial controllable loads – from TMP refiners to power-to-heat. avoltra turns them into revenue.

TMP refiners & groundwood mills

Use the oversizing of your refiner lines: storage chests let you shift pulp production into low-price hours – while the paper machine stays fully supplied.

Power-to-heat boilers

Electric steam generators as a secondary flex asset: shift load without interrupting production and profit from price spreads.

Spot market optimization

Automatic schedule optimization based on EPEX day-ahead and intraday prices – your refiners run when power is cheapest.

Balancing energy & aFRR

Unlock additional revenue by participating in the balancing market – your controllable load becomes a source of income.

Energy procurement

Optimize procurement. Lower costs.

AI-powered procurement strategies for energy-intensive paper producers – data-driven, automated and matched to your load profiles.

Real-time market data

Track power and gas prices live and react instantly to market movements.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which equipment in a paper mill can be operated flexibly according to electricity prices without putting the paper machine at risk?

Equipment with a buffer is best suited, such as TMP refiners and groundwood grinders whose pulp is stored temporarily in large tanks (chests), power-to-heat boilers and, depending on the site, recovered paper processing. The paper machine generally keeps running, because downtime there costs efficiency and quality. avoltra plans the operation of this equipment based on day-ahead and intraday prices while observing fill levels, minimum run times and the supply of the paper machine.

Is energy flexibility worthwhile if our paper production runs at almost continuous base load?

That depends on how much buffer and overcapacity your stock preparation has. We check this in advance based on your load profiles and equipment data. If the flexibility potential is low, the lever usually lies in procurement: more accurate load forecasts, a clear procurement strategy and a transparent energy budget.

Can energy software also take our own power plant (CHP, biomass, hydropower) into account?

Yes. avoltra records on-site generation together with consumption and creates forecasts for both sides. This lets you see your actual open position and buy only the volumes that your own plants do not cover. Using spot prices and fuel costs, you can also assess when on-site generation pays off and when buying electricity is cheaper.
